The throne is not empty: Christ reigns

By Dr. Luis Soto

As we contemplate the final weeks of Christ's earthly life—his humble birth, his crucifixion, and his resurrection—we can say with certainty: the manger is empty, the cross is empty, and the tomb is empty. But there is something that has never been and never will be empty: the throne.

We live in a world where human thrones are tottering. Governments fall, leaders disappoint, and promises are broken. Yet the throne of heaven remains firm because Christ reigns.

The gospel does not end at the cross. Christ's ascension is the culmination of his redemptive work. In Acts 1:9–11, we are told that Jesus was taken up to heaven and received by a cloud, a symbol of the divine presence. This act was not a mere heavenly farewell, but a royal enthronement.

The cross was his humiliation, the resurrection his vindication, and the ascension his exaltation.

Scripture declares that Christ now reigns at the right hand of the Father. Psalm 110:1 and Acts 2:33–36 show that Jesus has been made Lord and Christ. This means that He is not an absent Savior, but an enthroned King with all authority.

The gospel not only announces forgiveness of sins; it proclaims the establishment of the Kingdom of God under the lordship of Christ.

From heaven, Christ continues his ministry. Hebrews 7:25 affirms that he lives to intercede for those who come to God through him. Our Savior not only died for us; he also continually represents us before the Father.

Finally, the ascension points toward the future. The angels declared that this same Jesus will return as they saw him go to heaven. The King will return in glory.

That is why the church lives with hope. The throne is not empty. Jesus reigns today, intercedes for his people, and will one day return.

Let us then live under His Lordship, proclaiming His Kingdom and joyfully awaiting His glorious return.
